Gene Editing Technology

What’s happening? Who’s innovating? What’s next?

Objective

The client was an R&D head and was working on next-gen technology. He was particularly interested in knowing the in-out of next-generation gene editing tools like CRISPR, TALENS, Meganuclease, and Zinc Fingers, etc. for the treatment of diseases. He wanted us to explore external opportunities around his innovation and understand what type of research is taking place around the topic. By doing this, he wanted to get an idea where research is heading and which research topics in the domain are getting more research attraction and explore collaboration opportunities to further develop the technology. The client shared that he is aware of what is discussed in conferences but wants to have an idea what type of concepts other inventors are trying to protect.

What we did?

Since client was working on next gen. technologies, he was not aware about the patents that are related to this next gen tech because of undeveloped terminologies which were making it difficult to locate the patents.

Secondly he wanted to judge if this tech area is getting a lot of research attraction from companies or only universities are inclining towards this area. Since many companies don’t publish research papers or disclose research in conferences again he was inclined to judge it through patents.

How did it help?

We started referring to all the documents where similar problems have been discussed which is solved by the next gen tech of our client. Thereafter, we started linking the problems with the solutions listed in the collected documents to judge if it leads to the tech area of our client . By doing this we built a knowledge base for our client. The knowledge base consisted of info like –

  • The problem addressed in the document
  • The solution described solving the problems
  • Clustering of various problems and solutions
  • Filters to go deep into the collected info on the basis of a variety of parameters like by the name of the company, university or the inventor, region of research & date filters.

This E-knowledge base helped our client with information on the existing research. Further, the client was able to use analytics over this knowledgebase to identify areas of opportunity for further research and also evaluate the collaboration options among various companies, universities and independent inventors researching in that area.
